How to choose a teething remedy: clear guidance from dentists
Reassuring guidance from the dentists behind MamaSmiles

The teething aisle can feel overwhelming. Powders, gels, drops, rings and countless toys all promise to help. It is hard to know what is safe, what is useful and what is not worth buying.

I am Jack, one of the practising dentists behind MamaSmiles. In clinic, we help parents make sense of this stage by focusing on what actually helps your baby feel more comfortable.

Here is what to look for and what to approach with care.

Start with simple comfort

Babies often respond well to:

  • gentle gum massage
  • cool teething rings
  • soft cloths to chew
  • extra comfort and closeness

These support your baby’s natural instincts and are usually enough for many families.

Look for thoughtfully chosen, gentle ingredients

Many parents prefer teething products that:

  • soothe tender gums
  • help keep the mouth clean
  • support new teeth
  • have simple, transparent ingredient lists

At MamaSmiles, we chose ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, curcumin, xylitol and hydroxyapatite because they fit the needs of tender gums and early teeth without numbing agents.

Be careful with numbing products

Numbing agents reduce sensation but do not solve the cause of the discomfort. They can also make it harder for babies to notice if they bite their cheeks or lips. That is why we avoid numbing ingredients in our own products.

Be cautious with unproven herbal or homeopathic remedies

Some have limited evidence. Some vary widely between brands. Some are safe, but many have no clear support behind them.

If a product does not explain how it works, or relies only on tradition, it may not give meaningful relief.

Check that the product is suitable for your baby’s age

Always choose age appropriate products and follow package instructions. If you are unsure, your health visitor or pharmacist can help you decide.

Avoid anything that makes big promises

Any product that claims to cure teething or stop discomfort completely is not giving accurate information. Teething is a normal developmental stage. Remedies help comfort, not cure.

If something does not feel right, or your baby seems unwell in a way you cannot explain, speak to your GP, health visitor or NHS 111.

Quick summary

  • start with simple comfort measures

Choosing a teething remedy should feel simple, not overwhelming. Once you know what to look for, it becomes much easier to find something safe and supportive. At MamaSmiles, our aim is to give you guidance that helps you make confident choices at every stage of teething.
